At the request of its Russian members, OSI has supported requests for funding for three projects relating to Nuclear proliferation & environmental threats in the Russian Far East, Marine Electronic Highway for the Northern Sea Route, and Assessment of Risks Associated with Increased Maritime Transportation of Oil and Natural Gas via the Arctic Bridge and Northern Sea Route.
This process has been backed up by the defense community as well as by civilian agencies.
OSI delegation consisting of its Vice Chair, Rear Admiral Stone; President , Dr. Viktor Sebek; OSI Senior Adviser on US Ocean Security Affairs, Mr. Dieter Rudolph and Senior Policy Adviser on Russian Arctic and Pacific Affairs, Professor Vitaly Shelest, briefed the Russian Ambassador to Washington, H.E. Yuri I. Ushakov on the current efforts to cooperate with the Russian Arctic and Pacific security issues.
These same OSI members were invited to visit Moscow from June 13 to 16 to hold talks with Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense (at the level of deputy minister and assistant secretary), Nuclear Energy, Maritime Board (which is chaired by the Prime Minister), senior representatives of Foreign Relations and Budgetary committees in the State Duma and the Council of Federation, and other officials.
OSI was extremely pleased to note that the Russian Federation set up the OSI National Committee, consisting of highest ranking political, military, congressional, local Government and academic leaders.
