BACKGROUND NOTE: This event is organized by a non-governmental agency, OSI. This means it brings together a diverse range of stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including the defense community, to combine forces in finding new solutions to significant problems and then taking the next step - solving them.
It is the first in a series of annual forums on different aspects of ocean security, in accordance with institutional arrangements reached at the inaugural OSI Wider Caribbean Conference held in Corpus Christi, Texas, from 10 to 12 February 2007.
The purpose of these forums is to provide the launching pad for OSI as a catalytic and facilitating clearing house for projects in the field of ocean security. The Cartagena de Indias Forum will focus on defense (port) and economic security (tourism, shipping, energy and trade).
The first OSI Forum in Cartagena will above all focus on those projects which can be replicated throughout the region, Latin America and other regions of the world. The OSI Forum will have a new feature: a trade show enabling private and public sectors to showcase their expertise in relevant areas.
